Mackinac County Warrant Checks
A Mackinac County warrant check usually starts at a screen and ends with a phone call. No active-warrant roster is published here. The Sheriff's Office page routes people to its administrative, jail, and tip lines, and the 92nd District Court links the Michigan judiciary case search from its own site. The court offices hold the actual files. Give staff the full legal name as it appears on court papers, plus a case or citation number if one exists. A number speeds things up considerably.
- Search the Michigan judiciary case search by name, or by case number.
- Call the 92nd District Court for misdemeanor, traffic, and preliminary felony status.
- Call the County Clerk for Circuit Court files after a bindover.
- Use the Friend of the Court automated line for support and custody enforcement.
- Send a narrow written request to the County Clerk's FOIA coordinator for agency records.
Note: A clear online search is not proof that no Mackinac County warrant exists, because not every case category appears publicly.
Where a Mackinac County Warrant Question Goes
Mackinac County sorts warrant questions by court level, not at one counter. Misdemeanors, traffic citations, and felonies before bindover belong to the 92nd District Court. Once a felony moves up, the Circuit Court and the County Clerk hold the file.

Warrants in Mackinac County: The Main Types
Michigan uses a short set of labels, and each label points to the office to call. An arrest warrant follows a complaint and a probable-cause finding. A bench warrant comes from a judge after a missed appearance or a violated condition, and a search warrant covers property rather than people under different access rules. Mackinac County materials use the bench warrant label, with no separate capias channel here. Two entries matter most: the failure-to-appear bench warrant and the family-support warrant, both triggered by a missed obligation.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | Complaint and probable cause | District or Circuit judge, or magistrate |
| Bench warrant | Missed date or violated condition | The judge on the case |
| Family support warrant | Unresolved support obligation | Family Division judge |
| Traffic-related warrant | Missed traffic date or unpaid obligation | 92nd District Court |
| Search warrant | Sworn showing for described property | Judge or magistrate |
| Federal warrant | Federal charge or investigation | U.S. District Court, Western District |
What ICHAT and LEIN Cannot Tell You About Mackinac County Warrants
Two state systems come up in most warrant conversations, and neither answers the question people bring. LEIN, the Law Enforcement Information Network, is limited to criminal-justice and authorized agencies. ICHAT is the public criminal-history product, and the Michigan State Police states plainly that warrant information is not available through it. A criminal-history result is not a warrant check. For Mackinac County, the dependable path still runs through the courts and the Sheriff's Office.
| System | What It Holds | Answers a Warrant Question? |
|---|---|---|
| LEIN | Statewide criminal-justice records | No. Access is restricted. |
| ICHAT | Public criminal-history searches | No. Warrant data is excluded. |
| Michigan case search | Public case records | Partly. Still needs court confirmation. |
| County FOIA request | Qualifying agency records | Sometimes. Not a court file. |
Mackinac County Warrant Records: What They Show
A court file carries more than a name. The register of actions lists each event in order, from the charge and the issuing judge to the arraignment, the release decision, and any later recall. Most people want three fields first: the case number, the current status, and the court holding the file. Ask for status in plain words. Active, recalled, quashed, and closed mean different things, and only the Mackinac County court holding the file can say which applies today.
| Case number | The court's identifier for the proceeding, shown as Case Number. |
|---|---|
| Subject identification | The name or permitted description, with protected identifiers withheld. |
| Charge or offense | The offense in the complaint, with count and offense date when public. |
| Issuing court and judge | Which Mackinac County court signed the order. |
| Bond or release condition | Any interim bail amount or condition stated in the order. |
| Current status | Issued, served, returned, recalled, quashed, or closed. |
Warrant Terms Mackinac County Records Use
Court staff in Mackinac County use terms that do not always translate. These words come up most in warrant questions here.
- Active warrant
- A warrant the court currently treats as enforceable.
- Bench warrant
- A judge's warrant after a missed appearance or violated order.
- Bindover
- Transfer of a felony case from District to Circuit Court.
- Recall or quash
- Court action ending a warrant. Payment alone is not a recall.
- Failure to appear
- Missing a required appearance, which can lead to a bench warrant.
- Cash bond
- A money-backed bond. The jail or court confirms release.

Traffic, Ordinance, and Family Support Routes in Mackinac County
Three kinds of Mackinac County cases generate warrant questions without any new criminal investigation: a missed traffic response, an unresolved ordinance matter, and an unpaid child-support obligation. The county's 2021 traffic schedule lists local categories. Treat it as dated.
- Traffic citations: the statewide ticket search first, then the 92nd District Court.
- Ordinance matters: the two city offices handle code questions and route citations to court.
- Support and custody: the Friend of the Court automated line carries bench-warrant information.
- Federal matters: researched through the Western District docket, not a county list.
Handling a Mackinac County Warrant
Do not treat an active warrant as something to sort out later. MCR 6.105 gives a person who appears voluntarily before the issuing court a defined path: arraignment within two hours when the court can manage it, or a recall of the warrant with a future date set. Call the Mackinac County court that issued it before you go. Ask where to appear, what identification to bring, whether a lawyer should come, and whether a bond amount is set. The same recall path covers bench warrants in Mackinac County.
Important: Talk to a Michigan attorney before turning yourself in, and never send money in response to an unsolicited call about a warrant.
The 2025 Mackinac County Warrant Scam Warning
In May 2025 the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office warned residents about a caller claiming to represent the office and demanding money to settle warrants. The office does not do business that way. Verify with a number you looked up yourself. Payment routes deserve the same caution: a fines portal and a bond portal both accept money, but neither recalls a warrant on its own.
Note: A caller pressing for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer is not collecting a legitimate court obligation.
Warrant Record Access Under Michigan Law
Michigan separates court files from agency records, and that line decides how a copy is requested. Court records follow court rule rather than the state open-records law, so a public case file in Mackinac County comes from the clerk under MCR 8.119. The Michigan Freedom of Information Act covers qualifying county agency records. Juvenile files, sealed material, and search-warrant affidavits carry their own limits.
Key Rules:
Michigan Freedom of Information Act, MCL 15.231 - covers county agency records, and a written request starts the clock.
MCL 15.235 - a public body generally answers in five business days, with up to ten more allowed.
Michigan court-file access standards (MCR 8.119) - court records are open unless a rule or order restricts them.
MCL 780.654 - a search-warrant affidavit can stay nonpublic during an investigation.
Mackinac County Numbers That Shape a Warrant Search
Scale explains part of the answer. Mackinac County holds roughly ten thousand residents across two peninsulas and an island, a caseload far too small to justify a public warrant database. The jail is a small facility as well.
A county this size answers Mackinac County warrant questions by phone and by file, so confirm before making a trip.
Search Fields in the Michigan Courts Interface
Michigan's judiciary case search is the closest thing Mackinac County has to a warrant lookup. You can search by last name or business name. A first and middle name works too, as does a birth year or a case number. The available filters shift with the court you pick. To start, enter through the 92nd District Court route or use the statewide landing page.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |

| First name | Text | Optional | Narrows a common surname. |
| Middle name | Text | Optional | Helps with a filed middle initial. |
| Birth year | Number | Optional | Separates people sharing a name. |
| Case number | Text | Alternative | Fastest when you have one. |
Note: The interface states that online information is informational only and that the court of record controls the official file.
